[PCI-DSS] Requirement 3: Protect stored cardholder data Encryption is a critical component of cardholder data protection. If an intruder circumvents other network security controls and gains access to encrypted data, without the proper cryptographic keys, the data is unreadable and unusable to that person. Other effective methods of protecting stored data should be considered as potential risk mitigation opportunities. For example, methods for minimizing risk include not storing cardholder data unless absolutely necessary, truncating cardholder data if full PAN is not needed, and not sending PAN in unencrypted e-mails.

3.6.a Verify the existence of key-management procedures for keys used for encryption of cardholder data.

Note: Numerous industry standards for key management are available from various resources including NIST, which can be found at http://csrc.nist.gov.


3.6.b For service providers only: If the service provider shares keys with their customers for transmission of cardholder data, verify that the service provider provides documentation to customers that includes guidance on how to securely store and change customer's keys (used to transmit data between customer and service provider).

3.6.c Examine the key-management procedures and perform the following:
